Insights into binding and ellipsis from head-mounted eye-tracking experiments

چکیده
1 Binding It has long been observed that pronouns (he/she/him/her, etc.) and reflexives (himself/herself, etc.) seem to be in complementary distribution in English. This means that in the same structural position a pronoun and a reflexive will have different interpretations. In (1) for example, a pronoun in object position is barred from taking the subject as its antecedent, but a reflexive in the same position is required to take the subject as its antecedent.

A Nonobscuring Eye Tracking Solution for Wide Field-of-View Head-mounted Displays
We present a solution for integrating a binocular eye tracker into current state-of-the-art lens-based head-mounted displays (HMDs) without affecting the available field-of-view on the display. Estimating the relative eye gaze of the user opens the door for HMDs to a much wider spectrum of virtual reality applications and games. Further, we present a concept of a low-cost head-mounted display w...

While head-mounted display (HMD) technologies have undergone great developments since the first HMD for 3D visualization originated by Ivan Sutherland in the 1960’s, HMD technologies have suffered from tradeoffs in capability and limitation. The main issues of HMDs include the tradeoff between resolution and field of view (FOV), the presence of large distortion for wide field of view designs, t...
متن کاملCollecting and Analyzing Eye-tracking Data in Outdoor Environments
Early eye-tracking experiments required participants to stabilize their heads while looking at two-dimensional stimuli in a room with carefully controlled lighting. Many of the field’s standards for collecting and processing data reflect this history of stationary, laboratory-based eyetracking. Over the last two decades, the cost and quality of wearable eye-tracking systems has improved dramati...
متن کاملA content - addressable pointer mechanism underlies comprehension of verb - phrase ellipsis q Andrea
Interpreting a verb-phrase ellipsis (VP ellipsis) requires accessing an antecedent in memory, and then integrating a representation of this antecedent into the local context. We investigated the online interpretation of VP ellipsis in an eye-tracking experiment and four speed–accuracy tradeoff experiments. To investigate whether the antecedent for a VP ellipsis is accessed with a search or dire...
متن کاملAssignment of reference to reflexives and pronouns in picture noun phrases: evidence from eye movements.
Most structural Binding Theories predict a complementary distribution between reflexives and pronouns in picture noun phrases containing possessors (e.g. "Ken's picture of himself/him"). In two head-mounted eye-tracking experiments, listeners frequently violated Binding Theory predictions for reflexives, often interpreting the reflexives as taking an antecedent outside of the binding domain, an...
